My roommate of four years, Augustine Garcia, died yesterday, March 15, the day before his 76th birthday.
A Native American from San Juan Pueblo, he was proud to have served his country in the U.S. Navy during the war in Vietnam. Sole survivor of a mortar attack on his bunker during a land operation, he was left for dead and came to in a navy hospital. He was back on duty in no time, but had suffered the loss of hearing in one ear. "You're a tough Injun," I used to tell him.
Shortly after the war he worked in construction and was one of the crew who built his and my future home -- Casa Real Care Center!
God grant him the reward of his labors.
