Saint Patrick's Breastplate

Saint Patrick's Breastplate is a popular prayer attributed to Ireland’s patron saint. According to tradition, Patrick wrote it in 433 A.D. for divine protection before successfully converting the Irish King Leoghaire and his subjects from paganism to Christianity. The term "breastplate" refers to a piece of armor worn in battle; clearly, it is Christ himself who is the breastplate.

The original text is longer than the text below; you can find several musical renderings of it on YouTube.  There is a beautiful musical setting for the shorter version, but I have not found that online.

This is a prayer you can easily memorize. Recite it each morning to bind Christ to yourself, and yourself to him.

Christ, as a light, illumine and guide me.
Christ, as a shield, o'ershadow and cover me.
Christ, be under me. Christ, be over me.
Christ, be beside me on left hand and right.
Christ, be before me, behind me, about me.
Christ, this day be within and without me.

Christ, the lowly and the meek,
Christ, the all powerful!
Be in the heart of each to whom I speak,
in the mouth of each who speaks to me,
in all who draw near me,
or see me, or hear me.
