Writing


As I mentioned earlier, I produce our weekly newsletter, The Casa Real Times.  This was the lead story for the April 1 issue:


President Waives Fees for Nursing Home Residents
SAYS SENIORS "DESERVE A BREAK"

The president shared a smile with Pope Francis at the Vatican last week.  He told reporters that the pope's concern for the elderly "inspired me," and "I decided I had to do something special for them."
President Obama had good news for seniors last night.  The fees that they pay to nursing homes—which eat up most of their monthly Social Security benefits—will be waived in April.  "Seniors will be able to spend their entire Social Security check this month for whatever they want.  They deserve a break," Mr. Obama said.  "Spending by seniors," he added, "will also give a boost to our recovering economy."

When residents turned to page 2, they found it was upside down.  When they turned it right side up, they were supposed to see this (upper left):

 
 
What caught their eye, however, was this (upper right):

The result was that they forgot about "read more on page 2" and didn't catch the joke. The administrator (a great guy) later told me that for about a week he had to deal with irate residents who went to the front desk (where we collect  our princely $67 monthly allotment) and demanded their full SS benefit.  I told him, "The pen is mightier than the sword."
